Arsenal legend Ian Wright has suggested that a striker Manchester City sold last year would have helped the Gunners win the Premier League had he played for them.

As one of the biggest football clubs in the world, Manchester City have had plenty of legends on their books over the years.

From icons of yesteryear like Colin Bell to contemporary legends like Sergio Aguero, City fans have been spoilt for stars over the decades.

There have also been cult heroes who ‘the streets won’t forget’, and one such player has been lauded by Wright, who suggested he’d have loved to see him play for Arsenal.

Ian Wright would have loved to see more of Julian Alvarez in the Premier League

Ian Wright took part in the latest episode of SDS on YouTube, in which they discussed and debated the best Premier League strikers by decade.

The Highbury icon spoke about Julian Alvarez, who was on City’s books for two-and-a-half years.

Wright said he would love to have seen more of the Argentina international in the Premier League and admitted Arsenal could have done with a player like him.

“I would love to have seen a bit more of Julian Alvarez,” said Wright.

“You saw him at the World Cup, and you saw him at City coming in off the back of Erling Haaland, the goals he scored and the player he was, you think ‘why couldn’t we get Alvarez?’

“For me, he’s a Premier League winning striker, if he had more time here, he would be at that top end, he’s a top striker.”

How Julian Alvarez fared during his time at Manchester City

Julian Alvarez joined Man City in 2022, the Citizens paying Argentine giants River Plate around £14million to sign him.

Alvarez had a successful two-year stint at the Etihad Stadium, registering 36 goals and 17 assists en route to winning six major trophies.

In his first season, Alvarez registered 17 goals and four assists in 49 appearances, his efforts helping City win a historic Treble.

Alvarez then notched up 19 goals and 13 assists in all competitions in 2023/24 as the Citizens won their fourth Premier League title in a row.

Alvarez also won the UEFA Supercup and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2023, along with the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa America for Argentina.

In August last year, Atletico confirmed the signing of Alvarez on a six-year deal reportedly worth up to £82million, which became a club-record departure for City.
