Wayne Rooney was a consistent thorn in Manchester City’s side during his playing career.
Indeed, as Manchester United’s star player throughout the 2000s and early 2010s, City fans don’t necessarily have the fondest memories of the former England captain.
However, despite being a Manchester United legend, Rooney has always seemed to have some sort of underlying respect for City.
Rooney is a big fan of Erling Haaland, while Rooney even almost signed for Man City at one point too.
Now, speaking to Thogden on TikTok, Wayne Rooney has made a serious claim about Manchester City legend, and his former striking rival, Sergio Aguero.

Wayne Rooney picks Sergio Aguero over Kylian Mbappe
Rooney was playing a game of ‘start, bench or sell’ where he had to pick between three top class players.
The pundit was asked to choose between Kylian Mbappe, himself and Sergio Aguero, and he gave something of an interesting answer.
Mbappe is considered to be the best player in the world by some, but, intriguingly, Rooney picked Aguero over the Real Madrid star, ultimately saying he’d start Aguero, bench Mbappe and sell himself.
Sergio Aguero compared to Kylian Mbappe
Sergio Aguero is an all-time great, and he’s one of the most legendary figures in Manchester City history.
At just £35m, Aguero is one of the best signings in City’s history.
However, despite Rooney’s claim here, it is hard to make an argument that Aguero is indeed better than Mbappe.
Indeed, the Frenchman’s record speaks for itself, and, at the age of just 26, he’s already written his name into the history books.
| Kylian Mbappe | Sergio Aguero | |
| 435 | Club games | 685 |
| 326 | Club goals | 385 |
| 132 | Club assists | 112 |
| 86 | International games | 101 |
| 48 | International goals | 41 |
| 87 | Champions League games | 73 |
| 55 | Champions League goals | 41 |
| 12 | World Cup goals | 2 |
| 1 | World Cup wins | 0 |
| 7 | League titles won | 5 |
Of course, Aguero has done it in the Premier League, which is an incredibly high level, but Mbappe has the upper-hand in terms of international accomplishments as well as his stellar Champions League record too.
Rooney is perhaps a bit biased here due to the fact he played against Aguero on so many occasions and saw his brilliance up close, while Rooney and Mbappe’s careers didn’t really overlap at the top level.
Regardless of who you prefer, one thing is for sure, Mbappe and Aguero are two of the greatest attackers of their generations.
