£17m player showed last night why Man City were right to sell him in the summer – opinion

Former Manchester City winger, Carlos Borges, recently showed why the Citizens were right to sell him during the previous summer transfer window.

Having seen the winger, who now goes by the name Carlos Forbs, score 55 goals and deliver 42 assists in 79 appearances for City’s youth teams, it may have surprised some that the club sold the 19-year-old to Ajax back in August in a deal worth over £17m.

However, having made his first return to England since then by appearing in Ajax’s 2-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Europa League last night, his performance may have made it clearer why the Manchester club felt the need to let him leave.

Forbs fails to impress against Brighton

Playing in the right-wing position, Forbs found himself up against James Milner, who was playing as Brighton’s left-back on this occasion, following on from his individual battle with current City winger Jeremy Doku last weekend, which ended up not going well for the Englishman.

However, the Ajax attacker failed to make any sort of impact on the game at the AMEX Stadium last night and was ultimately substituted off at halftime as a result.

Across the first period of the game, Forbs had just 14 touches of the ball in total and ended up giving possession away seven times.

In addition to that, the Portuguese youth international managed to get dribbled past on one occasion and even made an error that led to Brighton having an attempt at goal.

This performance ultimately earned the former City youngster a rather uninspiring overall match rating of 6.3/10 from SofaScore, making him the joint second-lowest-rated Ajax player on the night.

With all of that in mind, it’s easy to see why Forbs was taken off at halftime and backs up why City may have been right to cash in on him over the summer having now failed to show how capable he is of playing against an English side.
