Manchester City are one of England’s most successful football clubs with origins in 1880. The Etihad Stadium natives became a major force after Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s takeover in 2008.

Manchester City club name

Manchester City adopted their club name in 1894 in a rebranding aimed at reflecting the whole city. It is also from their name that the club adopted their nickname, the Citizens. While fans also use the Sky Blues as a nickname owing to their kits. Supporters have also used Man City as a short abbreviation.

Manchester City founding year

Despite Manchester City using 1894 on their badge to signify their name change, the club’s founding year is 1880. St Mark’s church formed a football team that would become the Citizens some 14 years later. They also briefly took on Ardwick AFC as their club name before rebranding as Manchester City.

Etihad Stadium has served as Manchester City’s home stadium since 2003. It had opened as the City of Manchester Stadium but has adopted its current name for sponsorship purposes since July 2011. Manchester City moved to the stadium after 80 years at Maine Road, their second full-time stadium.

Manchester City current league

Manchester City’s current league has been the Premier League since the 2002/03 term. The Citizens spent the previous season outside the top-flight following a spell as a yo-yo club. But they have been a mainstay of the division since 2002 and are now one of its most successful sides with a host of titles.

Manchester City appointed Pep Guardiola as the club’s latest manager in February 2016 ahead of the 2016/17 season. The Catalan coach replaced Manuel Pellegrini in charge at Etihad Stadium with an initial contract to June 2019. He has since extended his contract with the club through to June 2025.
