23-year-old Man City player who lost 85% duels let Pep down vs Palace – opinion

Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez put in a disappointing performance in the club’s recent 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace.

After finding themselves 2-0 up thanks to goals from Jack Grealish and Rico Lewis, the Citizens ended up dropping two points after conceding two goals within the final 15 minutes of the game.

While the entire team will be disappointed with the overall outcome, one player, in particular, we felt failed to deliver on this occasion was Alvarez.

Just like last weekend’s 2-1 win over Luton Town, the Argentine found himself playing in the centre-forward role in the absence of Erling Haaland.

Across the entire 90 minutes of the match at the Etihad Stadium, Alvarez had 40 touches of the ball in total, the fewest out of any outfield City player.

From an attacking point of view, the 23-year-old only had one attempt at goal, which failed to make its way past Dean Henderson in the Palace net.

As well as that, the striker ended up losing 85% of the duels he was involved in, with just one out of seven won.

He also gave two fouls away and got dribbled past on two occasions by the opposition, which further highlights how uninspiring Alvarez was.

This display ultimately earned the centre-forward a rather underwhelming overall match rating of 6.5/10 from SofaScore, making him the lowest-rated outfield player for the home side.

With all of that in mind, it’s clear that Alvarez didn’t have a great day and didn’t fill Pep Guardiola or the City supporters with confidence that he is capable of playing as a lone striker without Haaland in the team.

Moving forward, if the Argentina international continues to deliver this sort of performance, he could end up finding himself out of the team once Haaland gets back to full fitness.
