27-year-old Man City player wants to join Newcastle in January

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips reportedly has Newcastle United as his ideal destination should he end up leaving the Citizens in January.

The midfielder was linked with a move to the Magpies during the previous summer transfer window, although he ended up staying at the Manchester club and saying that he wanted to fight for a place in the team.

Now though, with the January transfer window approaching, some behind-the-scenes details have emerged regarding a potential move away from City for Phillips.

A recent report from 90 Min said that Newcastle are “very keen” on signing Phillips and are looking into a potential loan move for him in January.

The report also adds that the Tyneside club are “emerging as Phillips’s preferred option should he leave the Etihad Stadium this winter.”

City signed the midfielder from Leeds United back in the 2022 summer transfer window in a deal worth £45m.

Since then, the Englishman has only made 29 appearances for the club in all competitions, starting just one of the eight games he has featured in this term.

Having hinted that he may look to leave City in January in an effort to get more game time and cement his place in England’s squad for Euro 2024, it’s understandable why Newcastle, who have lost Sandro Tonali to a long-term ban, are keen to add Phillips to their ranks this winter.

Moving forward, if City are willing to loan the former Leeds star out once the January transfer window opens for business, this could be a move that suits all parties.

However, we feel that if they do end up waving goodbye to Phillips in January, they should look to bring in a suitable replacement that may have a better chance of fighting for and keeping a place in the team so Pep Guardiola’s squad isn’t too light in terms of numbers.
