Kieran Gibbs has said that he would hate to play against Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden.
The Englishman grabbed the headlines in midweek by scoring City’s first goal in their 3-1 win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League.
With the Manchester club now returning to Premier League action with a big clash away from home against Arsenal on Sunday, one former Gunner has been sharing his thoughts on the City star.
Gibbs says Foden would be a nightmare to play against
Speaking in a recent video published on the ESPN FC YouTube channel, Gibbs had this to say when asked whether he’d prefer to defend against Foden or Jack Grealish.
He said: “I feel like Foden is more of a tricker player to mark. Jack uses his body really well, so I feel like that can be easier to deal with.
“A player that’s always on the move was always a nightmare for me, Foden is always on the move so you just can’t take your eye off him for a minute.”
So far this season, the 23-year-old has made nine appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side across the Premier League and Champions League, scoring two goals and supplying four assists in the process.
With Foden having the second-highest total of key passes (18), shot-creating actions (30) and successful take-ons (11) in the City squad across this current Premier League campaign, this highlights just how much of a nuisance he can be for opposition players.
Back in August, after seeing the Englishman assist the winning goal in City’s 1-0 league win over Newcastle United, Guardiola said that Foden is “one of the best” he has seen in terms of players who can get the ball on the turn and attack defensive lines.
With all of that in mind, it’s easy to see why Gibbs would not have wanted to be up against the City star on the pitch.
