A fairly surprising statistic has emerged about one Manchester City player, after his ‘strange’ season.
2023/24 was another successful campaign for the club, as it culminated in an historic fourth straight Premier League title.
This came after the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.
Manchester City could not retain the Champions League, crashing out at the quarter-final stage to eventual winners Real Madrid on penalties. City then lost the FA Cup final against Manchester United.
But it was a decent season after the ultimate high of winning the Treble in 2022/23.
Many players had great seasons. Phil Foden was named Player of the Season, and it was yet another strong campaign for midfield lynchpin Rodri.
But it perhaps wasn’t the best of campaigns for Ederson, with a surprising statistic now emerging…
Ederson finished 2023/24 with lowest save percentage in PL
Ederson had an interesting season in 2023/24.
The Brazilian was absolutely huge last season as the club won an historic Treble, coming in clutch in the Premier League and Champions League.
But this term, he hasn’t quite been able to hit the same heights.
His momentum was slowed at times due to injury. He had to come off four times with injury, which is something you don’t see very often. City number two Stefan Ortega then did a very good job when called upon.
Pep Guardiola described Ederson’s season as ‘strange’ as a result of him coming off injured as much as he did.
Now, a less-than-flattering statistic has emerged.
£35 million signing Ederson actually finished the 2023/24 with the worst save percentage of all goalkeepers in the Premier League to have made 20 appearances or more in the competition.
According to WhoScored his rate was just 58.8%, which was lower than that of Sam Johnstone of Crystal Palace (59.4%) and Luton Town’s Thomas Kaminski (62.2%).
Disappointing from Ederson
It is surprising and slightly disappointing to see Ederson recording the lowest save percentage of all Premier League goalkeepers to make 20 or more appearances in 2023/24.
The South American has been an incredible signing for City, but he didn’t show his best level last term.
His ball-playing remains absolutely amazing, but it will be important for him to increase that save percentage next season, if he is still at the club of course. At the moment, there is speculation he could leave.
Thankfully, City were still able to win the Premier League despite Ederson’s low percentage. But with Liverpool and Arsenal having presented strong challenges last term, the Brazilian could potentially do with being a bit more solid between the sticks in 2024/25.
