Kevin De Bruyne may not have played much of a part in Saturday’s Champions League final, but make no mistake about it, he’s been the key man in this run.
Indeed, the Belgian was Manchester City’s talisman in Europe this season. He stepped up, as he always does, in the biggest of moments, and it’s hard to imagine where this team would be without him.
Speaking on Manchester City’s official YouTube channel, Steve Howey stated that he thinks City would not have won the Champions League if it weren’t for De Bruyne, stating that while it’s devastating for him to miss the majority of the final, he more than played his part in getting City to this point.
De Bruyne key to City’s win
Howey gave his verdict on the Belgian magician.
“They don’t become the Champions of Europe without Kevin De Bruyne do they?” Howey was asked.
“No they don’t absolutely not who’s to say that if he was to stay on things might have worked out differently. Things happen for a reason. Every player has missed a big game where you want to play and you have to come off. It’s devastating, while you’re absolutely delighted, there’s that personal bit inside you that is gutted. That will wear off when he lifts the trophy with Gundogan and celebrates with the boys, because if anyone deserves to be a part of that, it’s him, he’s been superb this season,” Howey said.
Played his part
De Bruyne wasn’t able to stamp his mark on the final on this occasion, but if anyone has earned their winners’ medal in this competition it’s De Bruyne.
The 31-year-old has been magic every step of the way, and while he had no luck on Saturday, he did everything he could to get City to this point.
De Bruyne is a City legend, and when all is said and done, we probably won’t even remember that De Bruyne came off in this final, we’ll just remember him as a treble winner.
