Danny Murphy was left blown away by the brilliance of Phil Foden for Manchester City in his side’s 1-0 victory against Newcastle United.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the pundit gave his two cents on the treble-winner’s outing against Eddie Howe’s side.

It’s fair to say that Danny Murphy was gobsmacked by how magnificent Manchester City attacker Phil Foden was against Newcastle United.

Danny Murphy raves about Phil Foden after Manchester City beat Newcastle

Branded as a ‘fantastic player’ by Kieran Trippier after the contest, the 23-year-old looked right at home in midfield.

The five-time Premier League winner set up Julian Alvarez’s winner whilst also creating a host of chances for his teammates, driving past defenders and being unstoppable on the half-turn.

“Well, I think also as well, if you think [Ilkay] Gundogan or [Riyad] Mahrez’s creativity and numbers are gone, Kevin De Bruyne is injured. This is a wonderful opportunity for him and let’s be clear, if he carries on playing like that, you cannot leave him out.”

“He was absolutely phenomenal. His game intelligence…”

“When he plays like that, you have to play him. If he can gain a level of consistency and that type of form, he has to play for club and country.”

Phil Foden can finally unleash his best self

As Danny Murphy as well as fans and pundits across the world witnessed Phil Foden dominate Newcastle while playing in midfield, there has been a clamour for him to play in this position for Manchester City going forward.

With that in mind, it is even more impressive how excellent the England international has been since breaking through at City, considering he has been deployed across the front line for the most part instead of his usual position.

Now that Foden is likely to continue to operate in midfield due to De Bruyne’s injury-stricken absence, he finally has the chance to consistently showcase his best self by playing in his favoured role.
