Alan Shearer hailed Phil Foden following his magnificent performance for Manchester City against Newcastle United last night.
The 23-year-old produced arguably his best display in many months for City.
It was Julian Alvarez who got the goal to separate the two teams at the Etihad Stadium.
The 1-0 win was a brilliant result for City, considering the quick turnaround from the UEFA Super Cup in midweek – something Pep Guardiola was not shy in voicing his displeasure about.
It was always going to be a tough game, against a side who’ll be challenging at the top in the coming years.
Alvarez broke the deadlock in the 31st minute, scoring ruthlessly into the far corner after a lovely cut back by Foden.
MORE MAN CITY STORIES
Foden was just at the heart of everything last night – and he received high praise on Match of the Day from Newcastle legend Shearer.

Yesterday’s game was huge for Foden.
Pep Guardiola trusted him to play as a number eight in the absence of Kevin De Bruyne.

And he more than repaid his manager’s faith.
Foden constantly received the ball between the lines and looked to make things happen.
He created seven chances in the game, meaning he was unlucky to come away with just one assist to his name.
Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer said: “He was absolutely sensational. The best player on the park by a mile. He looked so comfortable in that position, in the 10 position. I think he’s superb at doing that – receiving the ball on the half-turn, getting into those little pockets in front of the back four.
“He made it almost impossible for Newcastle today because he kept on doing that (playing through balls). His range of passing was excellent
“Now is the time for him to say ‘I want to stay in the team, I want to play in that position’. I think that’s it (his best position).
“His performance had absolutely everything.”
Phil Foden must play this position regular now going forwards
Arguably, this was the best individual performance of the season so far from any player in any game in the Premier League. He was that good.
Foden was absolutely amazing yesterday, and as Shearer said, looks completely at home in that role.
City fans will just hope now that the £225,000-a-week star gets an extended run playing there.

He wrought havoc against Newcastle, who have been one of the best defensive outfits in the Premier League over the past year or so.
It is scary to think what he could do against other teams that are not quite as strong.
