Manchester City’s players will be on cloud nine on Sunday after winning the Champions League on Saturday night, but there’s one player who may have a tinge of regret after last night’s final.
Indeed, Kevin De Bruyne had to go off injured in the biggest game of his career, and you can’t help but feel bad for the talismanic midfielder.
If anyone deserved to have a crowning moment in Istanbul it was De Bruyne, but instead, he had to watch from the bench as his teammates finished the job that he played such a part in starting.
Even the most cynical of football fans had to feel bad for De Bruyne on Saturday, and that was the case on the BBC’s radio commentary feed as even Chris Sutton showed sympathy for De Bruyne.
Sutton’s sympathy
The pundit spoke about De Bruyne as he went off the pitch.
“He’s gone, his hands are up. That is absolutely sickening for Kevin De Bruyne, they have a great replacement in Phil Foden, but blimey he has had some bad luck in terms of the Champions League, De Bruyne,” Sutton said.
Horrible
It really was horrible to see De Bruyne have to leave the pitch prematurely.
The Belgian has waited his whole career to win the Champions League, but what should have been the greatest moment of his career was marred by an injury.
That’s the cruel nature of football sometimes, and sadly, De Bruyne has had to play a reduced role in City’s Champions League win.
Hopefully he gets another crack at a Champions League final in the coming years and he’s able to finally make his mark on the stage of stages for Manchester City after being injured in two separate finals now.
