Alan Shearer praises Erling Haaland after debut Premier League campaign

Alan Shearer has claimed that Erling Haaland has set new standards for goalscoring in the Premier League.

After joining Manchester City last summer in a deal worth £51m, the striker went on to score 36 goals in 35 league appearances, picking up his first title with Pep Guardiola’s side.

This, unsurprisingly, has led to the 22-year-old being included in Shearer’s Team of the Season.

Speaking in a recent video announcing his team on the official Premier League website, the pundit said this about Haaland.

He said: “How could he not be in my team? The number of goals he’s scored has been frightening. What a season he’s had, he’s set different standards.”

In addition to winning this season’s Golden Boot award, the centre-forward also broke the record for the number of goals scored in a single league season, a record previously held by Shearer and Andy Cole.

His overall performances have earned the City star a strong season rating of 7.54/10 from WhoScored, leaving Kevin De Bruyne (7.58/10) as the only outfield player in Guardiola’s squad with a higher rating than him.

With all of that in mind, it’s easy to see why Shearer included Haaland in his Team of the Season and why he has shared such significant praise for him.

It also makes it undeniable that City’s move for the attacker has been a very successful one.

Moving forward, with the striker still in with a chance of winning the FA Cup and the Champions League before this season comes to a close, if he can help his side win their upcoming games against Manchester United and Inter Milan, this would put the cherry on the cake of what has been a storming debut season in England.
