Alan Smith has said that he would have loved to have played alongside Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.

The pundit and commentator made 481 appearances during his playing career, representing Arsenal and Leicester City, scoring 170 goals in total.

Now though, the 61-year-old has named one of today’s stars as someone he would have relished playing with in the same side.

During a recent Q&A on Reddit, Smith had this to say when asked which current player would he liked to have played alongside during his career.

He said: “Kevin De Bruyne. I think most players would say that.”

With 598 senior club appearances under his belt, the Belgian has scored 145 goals and supplied 249 assists.

During his time at City, who signed the player from Wolfsburg back in 2015 in a deal worth £55m, De Bruyne has made 369 appearances across all competitions, finding the back of the net 98 times and providing 165 assists along the way.

Having delivered so many assists in his career, it’s easy to see why Smith, who knows what it takes to score goals, would have loved to have had the opportunity to play with De Bruyne.

In fact, the 32-year-old ended the previous Premier League campaign with the highest rate of shot-creating actions per 90 minutes (6.55) and goal-creating actions (1.15) in the division.

This shows how regularly the midfielder is able to create goalscoring opportunities for his teammates and why Smith presumably thinks he would have been able to score plenty of goals if he had De Bruyne behind him.

In terms of this current season, if the 32-year-old can continue to deliver goal contributions for his side, he could give Pep Guardiola’s team a strong chance of regaining the three titles they picked up last term.
