Manchester City have brought just one new player in during this latest summer transfer window.

Back in July, the Citizens secured a deal worth up to £33m to sign Savinho from Toyes, making him the only incoming transfer the Manchester club have made this summer.

Despite that, recent reports have claimed that Pep Guardiola’s side have now set their sights on adding another player to their squad, who may not necessarily be seen as a new face at the Etihad Stadium if it were to happen.

In fact, this has since led to one pundit sharing his thoughts on the possibility of this particular transfer deal taking place in the near future.

Ally McCoist assesses potential Ilkay Gundogan return to Man City

After it was recently reported that Ilkay Gundogan could well leave Barcelona just one year after joining the Spanish club from City as a free agent, Ally McCoist had this to say on talkSPORT (20/8 9:44) about the possibility of seeing the midfielder make a return to his former club this month, which Guardiola has approved.

He said: “In terms of the move for him, absolutely. 14 trophies he’s won with Manchester City.

“It’s not as if he had a disaster of a season at Barcelona, anything but. It would make sense, it really, really would.

“Selfishly, from our point of view, it’s another fantastic player we can watch every week.”

Gundogan return would be special for City

During his seven-year spell at the Manchester club between 2016 and 2023, Gundogan made 304 appearances in all competitions.

Across those games, the midfielder scored 60 goals, delivered 38 assists and won multiple trophies along the way, as McCoist mentioned, captaining the club to their historic Treble before leaving to join Barcelona as a free agent.

Having enjoyed such a successful period at City, it’s safe to say that it would be very special to see Gundogan make a return to Manchester before the end of the month.
