Branded as ‘amazing’ by Fernandinho, the £47.5 million (Sky Sports) man had a season to remember, winning the treble whilst operating in a hybrid role where he dovetailed between being either a centre-back or a right-back and a midfielder.

What was fascinating about Stones’ unique role was how he not just took two positions in any particular game but roamed in every phase and dominated proceedings.

As a result, John Stones has now been nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award.

The other nominees include Manchester City teammates Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne alongside the Arsenal duo of Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard as well as former Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane.

John Stones is finally getting the credit he deserves

The fact that the 29-year-old has been recognised by his fellow peers as a rightful contender for the PFA Player of the Year award is a testament to the fact that his remarkable displays are finally getting the credit they merit.

It seems like due to a rough couple of years during his start to life at Manchester City, whether it be through injury or inconsistency, many failed to open their eyes to the England international’s turnaround.

Stones was the starting centre-back during City’s ‘Centurions’ campaign while also operating at the absolute level ever since the 2020/2021 season.

And in the previous campaign, John Stones perhaps played in one of the most complex roles any defender has in the 21st century while also being one of the mainstays during his team’s route to the treble.

It is nice to see the understated central defender receive his well-earned plaudits.
