Pundit Martin O’Neill has claimed that Phil Foden now has the chance to become a top player for Manchester City this season.
The 23-year-old recently put in a star performance from midfield in City’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League, the club’s first league game since learning that Kevin De Bruyne will be facing the next few months on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.
Following the victory over the Magpies, one pundit and former Premier League manager has made a claim about the City star and what this season could hold for him.
O’Neill highlights Foden opportunity
Speaking on talkSPORT, O’Neill had this to say about Foden and the opportunity ahead of him at the Manchester club.
He said: “He sees some exquisite passes, he can score goals as well.
“This is an opportunity for him now to start in the side, stay in the side and be a proper player for Manchester City rather than be in the periphery of where he seemed to have been in the last 12 months.”
Last season saw the 23-year-old start 22 of the 32 Premier League games he featured in, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists in the process whilst predominantly playing in wide roles.
Now that the Englishman has started both of City’s league games in this new campaign and completed the full 90 minutes in both, this shows the opportunity that Pep Guardiola has given him and is likely to keep giving him as a result of De Bruyne’s injury.
Having provided the assist for Julian Alvarez’s winning goal against Newcastle, this puts Foden in a good place to continue playing regularly for his side and doing as O’Neill said and showing that he can be a very significant and consistent player for City.
