Andros Townsend finds Man City silver lining despite ‘comical’ Feyenoord draw leaving him ‘lost for words’

Manchester City failed to secure what would have been a much-needed victory in their latest Champions League match.

Tuesday night saw City draw 3-3 with Feyenoord at the Etihad Stadium, blowing a three-goal lead in doing so.

Erling Haaland put the Blues 1-0 up from the penalty spot just before halftime. Things got even better for the home side as Ilkay Gundogan doubled their lead before Haaland bagged his second of the night just eight minutes into the second half.

Then within just 15 minutes, City conceded three goals which were strewn with individual errors from the likes of Josko Gvardiol and Ederson.

This has now left Pep Guardiola’s side without a win in their past six matches across all competitions.

At full-time one pundit and former Premier League star shared his views on City’s latest performance but managed to also pinpoint a silver lining from it.

Andros Townsend on Man City’s silver lining after Feyenoord draw

During BBC Radio 5 Live’s coverage of the match, Andros Townsend shared this verdict on what he saw from City.

He said: “I’m lost for words. It wasn’t vintage Manchester City but they were cruising. It was a comical defensive error from Josko Gvardiol that allowed Feyenoord back into the game and they capitulated.

“Gvardiol then gave the ball away for the second goal. For the third goal, there’s no need to play the high line when you are one minute away from a first win in six matches.

“In the end, all that hard work from City is undone, and the pressure now mounts even more ahead of the Premier League game against Liverpool.

“We have never seen defensive frailties like this from Manchester City before. It seems to be popping up in every single game they’ve played recently.

“But I think at least it’s a good thing that it’s individual errors that are costing them, as opposed to the structure in which they are playing.” 

City must cut out costly errors

In the Premier League, across their 12 matches, City have made nine errors that have led to an opponent having a shot at their goal, leaving only five other sides in the division with more.

Townsend wasn’t the only former Premier League star to discuss the Manchester club’s mistakes, as Gael Clichy addressed City’s errors and how they have impacted the team’s recent run of poor results.

He said: “You cannot keep continuing to make individual mistakes. You can do as much as you want but if your players individually are failing, something like this today will happen. That has happened in the last six matches.”

With Townsend suggesting that City’s errors are a better problem for them to have rather than their structure and overall style of play, this should be encouraging for the City supporters who will also be desperate to see their team get back on track as soon as possible.
