‘At the end of the day’… Pundit says Man City could sign Kylian Mbappe because of one specific reason

Pundit Steve Nicol has named Manchester City as one of the two Premier League clubs that have a chance of signing Kylian Mbappe.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the Frenchman has made it known to Paris Saint-Germain that he will be leaving the club in the summer once his contract expires.

While Real Madrid have been mentioned as a likely destination for Mbappe, one pundit has named two clubs in the Premier League that could be in with a chance of landing a deal for the attacker.

Speaking in a recent video shared on the ESPN FC YouTube channel, Nicol had this to say when asked which Premier League clubs have the best chance to potentially sign Mbappe this summer.

He said: “City or Liverpool. The best players want to go to the best teams and they want to go to teams that are winning.

“[Erling] Haaland went to Man City because they were winning. Okay, I guess I forgot about his dad and there’s a connection there. But at the end of the day, if Manchester City were consistently third and fourth, he’d have gone to the team that were consistently first like Man City.”

During his time at PSG, the 25-year-old has scored 243 goals and provided 105 assists in 290 appearances across all competitions.

While there can be no doubt about Mbappe’s ability on the pitch, the fact that he is currently getting a weekly base wage of €1.3m (£1.1m) and has previously shared his ambition of playing for Real at some point in his career, could make it a questionable deal for City to consider making.

Moving forward, unless Real rule themselves out of a potential move for the France international for whatever reason and he’s willing to take a significant pay cut that fits in more with City’s current wage structure, we feel the Manchester club should not concern themselves with making a potential move for Mbappe.
