Barcelona have reportedly started to make inquiries about how much they would need to pay in order to sign Manchester City loanee Joao Cancelo permanently in the summer.

The right-back joined the Spanish club on loan until the end of the season during the recent summer transfer window.

Although the La Liga side don’t have an option or obligation to make this move a permanent one in the loan deal, some behind-the-scenes details have emerged regarding Barcelona’s aim to keep hold of Cancelo beyond his current loan spell.

According to a written report in a recent print edition of Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), Barcelona have started making inquiries about what sort of fee it could cost them to sign Cancelo on a permanent basis next summer.

Although Barcelona haven’t spoken to City about a possible fee for the full-back, the Manchester club could be willing to accept €25m (£21m) for him.

During his short time at the Camp Nou so far, Cancelo has made three appearances for Xavi’s side, scoring one goal in the process, which came during Barcelona’s 5-0 win over Real Betis in La Liga.

Bearing in mind how the 29-year-old wasn’t involved in any of City’s matchday squads during the early stages of this season before he joined Barcelona, this suggests that he doesn’t have a future in Pep Guardiola’s ranks.

This, therefore, makes it easy to see why it has been reported that the Manchester club may be willing to accept a fairly low transfer fee for someone of Cancelo’s quality, which was on show back in November 2021 when Gary Neville labelled an assist he made against Everton as “ridiculous.”

Looking ahead to the next summer transfer period, we feel that a permanent exit for the Portuguese international is looking like the most likely outcome, although it’ll be interesting to see what sort of fee could be agreed for it.
