Nedum Onuoha has shared his praise for Manchester City’s reported transfer move for Mateo Kovacic.

Earlier today, it was reported that the Citizens had agreed a £30m deal with Chelsea to sign the midfielder, which is apparently made up of an initial £25m fee with £5m in add-ons.

This news has since led to one former City player and pundit sharing his thoughts on the matter.

Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, Onuoha said this about City’s reported deal for Kovacic.

He said: “Given the fact that he’s already a very good player, he’s going to come into a City set up which makes players better. I think it’s a fantastic signing.

“It does raise a few question marks about what the rest of the squad looks like. But when you’re signing a player of that quality, full Croatian international, City have definitely seen something in him and for that sort of fee it feels like a bargain.”

During his time at Chelsea, the 29-year-old scored six goals and delivered 15 assists in 221 appearances across all competitions, lifting a Champions League and Europa League trophy along the way.

Bearing in mind how recent reports have claimed that Ilkay Gundogan is close to securing a summer move to Barcelona, perhaps City’s swoop for Kovacic is their idea of having a suitable replacement for their current midfield figure.

Also, with the Croatian making more progressive passes (153) than any other Chelsea player that started the previous Premier League campaign with the west London club, mirrored with the fact that City made more progressive passes (2073) than any other side in the division shows why they have looked to sign the midfielder.

With all of that in mind, it’s easy to see why Onuoha thinks this reported deal for Kovacic could be seen as a bargain from City given his talent and the top-flight experience he has under his belt.
