Pundit David James has shared his praise for Sergio Gomez’s role in Manchester City’s fifth goal in their 5-1 win over Fulham in the Premier League.

The Citizens made it four league wins out of four yesterday as they beat the west London club at the Etihad Stadium.

Julian Alvarez and Nathan Ake got their names on the scoresheet in the first half before Erling Haaland bagged his first hat-trick of the season in the second period of the match.

Once the game had ended, one pundit and former City player was full of praise for one player who had a big role in the home side’s final goal of the game.

Speaking in a post-match live stream on the club’s official YouTube channel, James had this to say about Gomez, who assisted Haaland’s third goal.

He said: “Let’s not take away from Gomez. The play from Gomez down that left-hand side, that little fake, cutting inside, and the bit that got me was the fact that he was looking across the six-yard line, not seemingly noticing Haaland and then cuts the ball back for Haaland to put it back.

“What a goal, beautiful. From goals of slight fortune to a goal of brilliance.”

The Spaniard, who City signed for £11m last summer, came on as a substitute in the 76th minute of the game to replace debutant Jeremy Doku.

During his time on the pitch, Gomez, who was operating in a left-wing role, had 13 touches of the ball in total, accurately completing nine of the 10 passes he attempted.

In addition to proving the assist for Haaland, as James described, the 22-year-old also managed to win both of the ground duels he was involved in and successfully complete the two dribbles he attempted.

This shows how effective he was on and off the ball for the final period of the match, ultimately earning himself an overall match rating of 7.3/10 from SofaScore, leaving only the three City goalscorers with higher ratings.

With all of that in mind, it’s clear that Gomez had a positive impact on the game when he came on and very much deserved the praise from James.
