Bernardo Silva hails Manchester City teammate Joao Cancelo after latest masterclass

Bernardo Silva has branded Joao Cancelo ‘an amazing player’ after the star produced yet another dazzling performance for Manchester City.

The 26-year-old was arguably the star of the show against Borussia Monchengladbach during last night’s Champions League last 16 first-leg match in Budapest.

The former Juventus player laid on a sublime assist for Silva’s opener and was also involved in the second goal, crossing for Silva who nodded back across goal for Gabriel Jesus to tap in.

Cancelo again operated as a hybrid full-back/central midfield player, allowing him plenty of touches of the ball and chances to make use of his excellent vision and outstanding execution.

His performance brought him a deluge of praise on social media after the game, which has been a common occurrence this season, and goalscorer Silva also joined the love-in.

He said after the game (via MEN): “[Cancelo]’s an amazing player. I played with him for seven years at Benfica, we’re from the same generation, I know him well.

“So the connection is good, he knows my timing, I know how good he is at these kind of balls.

“It was a very good goal. His passing qualities and overall he’s been doing a great season and I’m happy for him.”

Although he showed signs of quality, it didn’t quite happen for him last season as he sought to adapt to English football, but something has just clicked in 2020/21, and this hybrid role Pep Guardiola has given him is absolutely fascinating to watch.

That ability to go comfortably into midfield when City have the ball to overload the opposition, but quickly get back in at full-back when they lose it is just brilliant.

Cancelo has everything, and those Philipp Lahm comparisons look more than fair at this moment in time.
