Manchester City already appear to be closing in on their first summer signing.
Hugo Viana – the new Director of Football at the Etihad Stadium – seems to have been very busy across his first weeks in the role.
Manchester City have already met with Bayer Leverkusen to discuss a range of matters, with the German side keen to sign James McAtee and Stefan Ortega, while the Citizens want Florian Wirtz to move the other way.
Now – however – serious progress has been made over the potential arrival of a new goalkeeper, as talks regarding Diogo Costa continue.
Diogo Costa agrees to join Manchester City
Foot Mercato are now claiming that the Portugal international has agreed a move to Manchester City.
Costa – who Manchester City think they can sign for £50m despite his £64m release clause – is said to have given the green light over a switch to the Etihad Stadium, having been left impressed by the project put to him.
Santi Aouna of Foot Mercato adds that Jorge Mendes – who Viana has a strong relationship with – is now pushing to seal the transfer.
It comes after the Mirror claimed that Pep Guardiola has new doubts about Ederson and his reoccurring groin injury, which has troubled the Brazilian across the last 12 months.
The Manchester City No.31 will also have just 12 months left on his contract in June, so Viana risks losing money on the glovesman by letting him leave for free in 2026 rather than make a fee this summer.
Diogo Costa has been called the “best in the world”
Make no mistake about it, Manchester City would be signing a top, top goalkeeper if this deal materialises.
Vitor Baia has already described Costa as the “best in the world” (via HITC) when asked about the 25-year-old, who has kept 18 clean sheets in 41 appearances so far this season.
The legendary Iker Casillas has also hailed the Porto No.99 previously, saying: “Diogo Costa is becoming a world class goalkeeper. He’s a star. He’s going to be a great goalkeeper.”
Therefore, Manchester City fans should be very excited about this rumour, as the man from Rothrist could easily dominate the goalkeeping scene for the next decade.
