Manchester City are the greatest team in the world.
They’ve just done the treble, they’re the champions of Europe and they have some of the best players on the planet at their disposal.
And yet, there may still be room for improvement.
That is the view of Dean Saunders who, speaking on the TalkSPORT Daily Podcast, stated that the Premier League champions’ squad could be even stronger if they signed Declan Rice to replace Kalvin Phillips as their depth option in the midfield.

Rice would make City better
Saunders gave his verdict on the ‘fast’ midfielder.
“I think he could fit into any team really. He’s going to get better and better. He’s better than Kalvin Phillips, I don’t know if he’s better than Rodri, but he would make Man City’s squad even better, he’d made Liverpool even better, and he would make Man United’s team better,” Saunders said.
Would he join?
Rice would undoubtedly make City a better team, but Saunders has also highlighted one issue in getting this deal done.
Indeed, there are questions around whether or not Rice is actually better than Rodri, and for that reason, he may not be keen to move to the Etihad.
You only have to look at Kalvin Phillips’ lack of minutes this season to see why Rice may not be too keen to make this switch. This is a player who wants to be starring. at the top level, not playing sporadically at the top level.
If City are to repeat the trick next season and go for a treble, or even a quadruple, once again, they do need to add one or two players for depth, but convincing someone like Rice to play a rotational role really isn’t easy.
