Big twist as £53 million Manchester City star openly admits he’d like to return to his former club

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is set to oversee a big revamp this summer.

Pep Guardiola must be at a loss to explain the failings of Manchester City this season.

So many players have regressed badly since last season, and many of them will undoubtedly be moved on from The Etihad in the summer.

In fact, it has been claimed that as many as eight first-team players could be sold.

A big overhaul is definitely needed. Guardiola needs to inject some youth and hunger back into his ranks at The Etihad.

The Man City head coach has to be ruthless with some of his underperforming stars by selling or releasing them in the summer, Kevin De Bruyne included.

However, another name could be set for an exit from Man City, albeit not imminently.

Matheus Nunes could be finished at Manchester City

City signed Matheus Nunes from Wolves in the summer of 2023 for around £53 million (Sky Sports).

However, things haven’t really worked out for the Portugal international at The Etihad.

He has actually been played out of position more times than not during his City spell.

Nunes has bagged just three goals and 13 assists in 57 games for City, and he has played only 3,079 in total minutes under Pep (Transfermarkt).

The 26-year-old has never really fit into Pep’s system at Man City, and a move away from The Etihad would probably be in his best interest.

Could that really happen this summer though? And is is possible that Nunes could return to Portugal?

Matheus Nunes eyeing Sporting return

When speaking to Mais Futebol, Nunes openly admitted that he would like to return to Sporting one day:

“Obviously I want to come back, and I’ve said that several times,” he said.

“I think they [fans] know that. On top of that, after the Champions League game, the affection I felt… I had already returned to the stadium, but playing there had never happened. And the affection I felt… I was really angry because we lost, but I can’t explain the affection I felt.

“I’m not going to say dates, obviously, I’m not going to estimate that, but obviously I’m going to come back.”

That’s what you call honesty from the 26-year-old.

Sometimes you hear players share their desire to return to their boyhood clubs at some point, but this seemed very different.

Firstly, Sporting isn’t the Man City midfielder’s boyhood club and secondly, he didn’t at any point suggest that his return to the Estadio Jose Alvalade will be when he’s in his twilight years.

There’s honesty and then there was those comments from the Portuguese ace.

Matheus Nunes probably won’t leave Manchester City to rejoin Sporting this summer.

He may well join another club though, before making his return to his former club in a few year’s time.
