Branded as ‘amazing’ by Pep Guardiola, the 18-year-old was paired alongside his countryman as one of the advanced midfielders.

The Bury-born wonderkid set up Foden’s opener, whilst running the show, finding pockets of free space, showcasing his technical wizardry and being extremely press-resistant.

So much so that Manchester City attacker Phil Foden showered Rico Lewis with praise after his side’s victory against RB Leipzig.

“Lewis was brilliant today in midfield. He broke a lot of lines. Rico has the courage to play at such a young age. I’m really happy for him. It’s nice to have an academy player on the pitch with me today so yeah, I’m happy for him”, he said.

Rico Lewis’ future may lie further forward

The Englishman has looked the part in the middle of the park before, having been deployed as an inverted right-back for much of his senior career.

But when played alongside Phil Foden as one of the advanced midfielders, Rico Lewis looked at his absolute best for Manchester City as they took home three points against RB Leipzig.

What makes Lewis particularly special in this role is the balance in his game.

If asked to create chances, the youngster can do so by finding space just outside the box, getting on the ball and having a sense of verticality in his final ball.

Rico Lewis’ experience at right-back also enables him to drift out wide and set up his teammates, as was the case for Phil Foden’s strike.

But simultaneously, the treble-winner is also capable of being minimalistic in his actions, taking swift decisions on the ball and allowing City to control the game, which makes him such a well-rounded midfielder.
