The Premier League has scheduled Manchester City to visit Burnley to begin their latest title defence. It has also pitted Pep Guardiola’s European treble-winning squad against last term’s Championship champions. Citizens icon Vincent Kompany led the Turf Moor club to the title.
Kompany delivered the second-tier trophy in his debut campaign as the Clarets’ head coach. He will now hope they avoid an immediate relegation but faces a daunting start at home to the Etihad Stadium natives. Manchester City have a dominant recent record against Burnley.

Manchester City team and injury news

Guardiola could include Manchester City’s new summer signing, Josko Gvardiol, in his squad for the first time at Burnley. The Citizens boss omitted the Croatian from his plans as Arsenal won the Community Shield 4-1 on penalties following their 1-1 draw at Wembley on Sunday.
Kevin De Bruyne also made his long-awaited return from a hamstring injury at Wembley last weekend. Guardiola was without the Belgian throughout pre-season due to the issue which forced him off in the Champions League final. De Bruyne featured for 26 minutes on Sunday.
Nathan Ake missed the Community Shield, though, while he recovered from an ankle injury. The Dutchman sustained the issue against Bayern Munich in pre-season. It also saw him sit out their clash with Atletico Madrid. But Guardiola has stated that Ake is fit to face Burnley.
Prediction: Burnley (0) vs (3) Manchester City

Manchester City will head to Turf Moor confident they can show their class against Burnley on Friday. The Citizens have a dominant record over the Clarets in the Premier League. The Etihad Stadium side have won 12 of their 18 meetings in the division since November 2009.
Burnley have failed to take a single point from Manchester City through their past eight top-flight encounters, either. While the Citizens’ winning run over the Clarets extends to 11 in all competitions since October 2018. Burnley last beat Manchester City 1-0 during March 2015.
George Boyd sealed Burnley a narrow result at home to a Citizens side featuring Manchester City legend, Kompany, in 2015. But the Belgian is unlikely to have a Burnley hero like Boyd to hand when Manchester City visit Turf Moor eying their eighth straight clean sheet in the tie.
