Ben Foster has said that Manchester City star, Ederson, is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

The Brazilian has been a stalwart in Pep Guardiola’s side since arriving from Benfica back in 2017 in a deal worth £35m.

Now in the midst of his seventh Premier League campaign at the Manchester club, the 30-year-old has found himself being the topic of conversation, with one former top-flight goalkeeper sharing his thoughts on the impact Ederson has made on modern shot-stoppers.

Speaking in a recent episode of Fozcast, Foster had this to say about two particular Premier League shot-stoppers that he feels have set the bar for goalkeepers in modern football.

He said: “I’m going to chuck two players who haven’t necessarily got the appearances just yet, but they’re very current and, for me, are probably two of the best goalkeepers in the world.

“I’m going to talk about Ederson and Alisson Becker. I think these are two of the brand new modern era of goalkeeper, that there aren’t many of them about that can do absolutely everything. You put a ball into the box, he’ll come and take it, you want a world-class save making, he’ll do that, you want somebody to be a sweeper keeper, cool, you want somebody to get that distribution off real quick, oh my gosh.

“They’ve both still got 200 appearances left in them but what they’ve done is they’ve shown how the game has evolved and what top managers and top teams want from goalkeepers nowadays. You have to be able to do this now and both of these goalkeepers, they’re the best in the world.

“Thibaut Courtois, for me, before he got his injury was probably one of the best stop-the-ball-going-into-the-back-of-the-net goalkeepers, and I still have him in my top three in the world, but for the complete package, these two goalkeepers have changed the game.

“They have absolutely changed the game, they have ruined so many goalie’s careers that do not like the ball at their feet, honestly they have killed them because you have to be able to do that now.”

Since arriving at the Etihad Stadium, Ederson has gone on to make 306 appearances for the club across all competitions, keeping 144 clean sheets along the way and winning numerous titles including five Premier League titles.

One aspect of the Brazil international’s game that has caught a lot of attention during his time in England is his distribution and how comfortable he is with the ball at his feet.

In fact, Guardiola said back in 2021 that Ederson’s ability in possession is the best he’s seen from any goalkeeper he has coached.

With City being known as a side that enjoys a lot of possession and being able to move the ball around the pitch accurately, it’s clear that Ederson has been a vital figure for them and a top signing from the club.
