Alan Shearer has shared his praise and admiration for Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez.

The 23-year-old has been a prominent figure in Pep Guardiola’s side this season, being one of the four outfield players that has started all five of City’s Premier League games.

Having had a successful midweek performance against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League where he scored two of City’s three goals in the 3-1 win, the Argentine has now found himself on the receiving end of some heavy praise from one pundit who knows a thing or two about what it takes to be a top attacking player.

Speaking in a recent edition of The Rest is Football, Shearer had this to say about Alvarez.

He said: “There’s a reason they let [Gabriel] Jesus go, they knew what they had, they’d seen him.

“What a talent, everything about him is fantastic, his energy and his ability to finish. Can’t speak highly enough of him, he’s fantastic.”

With eight games under his belt across all competitions so far this season, the Argentina international has scored four goals and supplied four assists.

With all four of those assists and two of his goals coming in the Premier League, Alvarez has made more key passes (16) and goal-creating actions (5) than any other player in City’s squad.

His overall appearances in the league have earned him a solid season rating of 7.61/10 from WhoScored, making him the fourth-highest rated player in Guardiola’s ranks.

Taking all of that into account, it’s easy to see why Shearer has been so complimentary about the City star and his ability on the pitch.

Moving forward, if the centre-forward can continue to have an impact in the team in terms of delivering goal contributions on a regular basis throughout the remainder of the campaign, he’ll undoubtedly be seen as one of City’s most important players.
