Manchester City got their 2024/25 Premier League season off to a bright start last weekend by beating Chelsea 2-0 away from home.

Erling Haaland put the Blues ahead in the first half before former Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic bagged against his old side to wrap up the three points for City.

With Pep Guardiola’s side gearing up for their first home game of the season at the Etihad Stadium with a clash against newly-promoted Ipswich Town, a pundit has made an interesting claim about City after seeing their win in West London.

Chris Sutton makes Man City claim after Chelsea victory

In a recent column for BBC Sport, Chris Sutton had this to say about City’s win at Stamford Bridge and what it means for some of the other top sides hoping to take the title off them this season.

He said: “Manchester City got a pretty routine win against Chelsea last week and that is them fairly half-cooked and nowhere near up to speed, so that is ominous for Arsenal, Liverpool and everybody else.”

City made a good start to the season against Chelsea

Even though City didn’t dominate Enzo Maresca’s side in terms of possession (52% vs 48%) or the number of shots at goal they had (11 vs 10), their overall performance would have undoubtedly pleased Guardiola and the supporters.

Specifically, the Citizens left Stamford Bridge with a team rating of 7.33/10 from SofaScore, which eclipsed Chelsea’s team rating of 6.74/10.

After this game, Guardiola heaped praise on Rico Lewis for his performance against Chelsea and what he does on the pitch for City.

Now that Sutton has suggested that this early performance from the champions will be worrying for the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool who will be looking to knock the Blues off the top spot this season, the aim now for City will be to keep their levels up consistently over the course of the campaign.
