Chris Sutton has predicted whether Sheffield United would stay up in the Premier League if they signed Erling Haaland today.

Chris Wilder’s side currently sit at the bottom of the Premier League table, having scored just 19 goals in 22 games.

For context, Erling Haaland alone just has five goals less than the Blades after starting 15 league games this season.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Oli McBurnie is Sheffield United’s top scorer in the league with a measly four goals to his name.

It’s safe to say that as things stand, Chris Wilder and Co. simply lack enough goals in their side to have a realistic chance of surviving at the end of the season.

However, Chris Sutton believes that even if Sheffield United signed Manchester City striker Erling Haaland today, even his presence would not prove to be enough to rescue them from a return to the Championship.

“If [Erling] Haaland moved to Sheffield United today, would they stay up? No. They wouldn’t”, he predicted on The Daily Mail’s It’s All Kicking Off podcast.

Surprising to hear Erling Haaland being written off so easily

Not to suggest that Erling Haaland would guarantee that Sheffield United would survive but for Chris Sutton to instantly write off the possibility is a surprise, in our view.

Often, the team amongst the relegation fodder who have a reliable goalscorer at their disposal tend to be the likeliest to survive the drop.

At Burnley and Everton in particular, they lack a killer in front who can dig them out of trouble.

Erling Haaland, on the other hand, would perhaps suit a team like Sheffield United due to being comfortable playing direct, long-ball football while being a menace in transition due to his freakish athleticism.

Add Haaland’s eye for goal to the picture and it is quite likely that he could end up being a legend at Bramall Lane by saving them from the drop.

However, it’s safe to rule out any possibility of the treble-winner playing for a relegation-battling side anytime in the future.
