Cole Palmer pinpoints the precise moment when he ‘realised’ he had to leave Man City

Manchester City have got used to seeing big-name players leave the club to start new chapters elsewhere.

For example, previous summer transfer windows have seen the likes of Julian Alvarez, Joao Cancelo, Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling, among others, wave goodbye to the Etihad Stadium on permanent deals.

Another player City have cashed in on in recent memory is Cole Palmer, who joined Chelsea during the 2023 summer transfer window after making just 41 senior appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Now in the midst of his second season at Stamford Bridge, the 22-year-old has shared some behind-the-scenes details on why he felt the need to walk away from City when he did.

Cole Palmer sheds light on why he needed to leave City

A recent report from The Telegraph, which included interview comments from Palmer, shared this insight into what benefit the former City academy star had from leaving the club.

It said: “Since Palmer joined Chelsea from City in September 2023, for a £42.5m fee that would now be three times as much, he has referred obliquely to the importance of getting away ‘from people I didn’t need to be around, going out to certain places when maybe I shouldn’t have been there.’

“Unlike some of his peers, he has never veered violently off the rails, but he acknowledges that he required a change of scenery, a freedom from temptation.

“‘It was good to get out of the comfort zone. Manchester was same old, same old. So something fresh was needed, I think. By the time I went to the Euro Under-21 tournament last year, I realised it was good just to focus on football.’”

“I ask if he enjoys the area as a base, having long been curious about how much there is to do for 20-something Chelsea players in the manicured suburbia of Surrey’s Golden Triangle.

“‘Manchester’s better, but I don’t mind it. I do like it around here, because it’s quiet, there are no distractions. Everyone you would go out with on a day-to-day basis is nowhere near you.’”

John Stones made Palmer ‘aware’ of how he felt about his City exit

During the October international break, John Stones discussed Palmer’s City exit, sharing this on how he felt about it at the time.

He said: “I was a huge fan of Cole as soon as he came into our first team setup, what he brought to the game, how he played as if he was in the park.

“I was sad to see him leave, [I] made him aware of that but what he’s gone on and done is a credit to him, how he’s conducted himself how he’s stepped up in big moments is honestly credit to Cole and what he’s doing.”

In addition to that, one of Chelsea’s sporting directors, Paul Winstanley, revealed that Palmer “showed great desire” to join Chelsea from City.

Now that Palmer has shared that he felt the need to leave Manchester due to factors away from the football pitch and what may have been going on outside the club around him, this shows how eager he was to get rid of any unnecessary and potentially damaging distractions and allow himself to focus on his football.

Having had such a successful time at Chelsea so far from an individual point of view, it seems that leaving Manchester behind and getting settled in London has very much benefitted him and his overall game.
