It has been reported that Manchester City have opened talks to complete a transfer for Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic.
This revelation comes from Fabrizio Romano, as the £40 million (Sky Sports) man reportedly has a huge admirer of his in Pep Guardiola.
Now, it seems like Manchester City are ready to ramp up negotiations to sign Mateo Kovacic.
Fabrizio Romano: Manchester City open talks to sign Mateo Kovacic
With Ilkay Gundogan’s contract set to expire at the end of the season and Bernardo Silva seemingly close to an exit for the past couple of summers, it seems like a brand-new midfielder will don sky blue in the following campaign.
Several names have ben touted to come in for either one of the pair or even both, such as Jude Bellingham and Gabri Veiga to name a few.
However, it seems Manchester City consider Mateo Kovacic to be the answer, as it has been revealed that they have ‘opened concrete talks’ to sign him.

In addition, it has been claimed that ‘positive discussions’ have taken place with the former Real Madrid sensation regarding his personal terms.
Furthermore, talks are expected to continue as Chelsea are believed to be open to a sale.
Mateo Kovacic would be a brilliant signing, if not for his injury woes
Mateo Kovacic to Manchester City makes complete sense, as his technical security, ball-carrying ability and engine are top class, and in some senses, he would be a top replacement for Bernardo Silva.
In terms of his profile, the Croatian international has all the ingredients to become a smash hit at the Etihad Stadium.
At the same time, time and again, Kovacic tends to go down injured and his availability remains a major concern.
That is likely to be a huge red flag for a City side that compete on all fronts, which makes this move one that should perhaps divide opinion.
