Guillem Balague has suggested that Xabi Alonso could be a candidate to replace Pep Guardiola at Manchester City in the future.
Following the recent announcement from Jurgen Klopp saying that he will be leaving Liverpool in the summer, the Bayer Leverkusen has been mentioned as a possible replacement for the German.
Despite that, one journalist has claimed that Anfield may not be the only possible future destination for the Spaniard.
Balague names City as potential destination for Alonso

Speaking in a recent video on his YouTube channel, Balague had this to say about Alonso and what his next step in management could be.
He said: “When he moved to Leverkusen he had an idea which was if it goes well here in Germany, then Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Liverpool and I will add Manchester City, it could be a possibility, if it went badly he could go to Real Sociedad.”
After having a successful playing career featuring for the likes of Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich under the guidance of Guardiola, the 42-year-old is currently in the midst of his first senior management job.
Having been appointed as Leverkusen’s manager back in October 2022, the former midfielder has overlooked 64 games in total ahead of tonight’s Bundesliga clash against Borussia Monchengladbach.
Across those 64 games, Leverkusen have won 41, drawn 13 and lost 10, currently finding themselves at the top of the Bundesliga.
This makes it easy to see why he has now been backed to potentially manage one of the big clubs that Balague mentioned in his video.
With Guardiola’s contract at City set to expire in the summer of 2025, if the 53-year-old decides to call it a day at that point, we feel that if Alonso continues to have a successful time in Germany and is available at the time, he could be an interesting heir for Guardiola.
