Danny Murphy has claimed that Rodri has raised his game to the highest level with Manchester City this season.
The Spaniard recently won his third Premier League title with the Citizens since arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2019 for a fee of £62m.
With one league game left to play, which sees the champions head down to Brentford before getting ready for the FA Cup and Champions League finals, the midfielder has already found himself in one pundit’s team of the season.
Murphy hails Rodri over Casemiro
Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy said this about Rodri and his decision to include the City midfielder in his team of the season ahead of Manchester United’s Casemiro.
He said: “Rodri’s level of performance has been his best so far in a City shirt. He’s played nearly every game, his durability is phenomenal and he starting to add some goals. The success that City have had and are going to have means that Rodri just tips Casemiro.”
Having featured in all but one of City’s league games this season, Rodri has played more minutes than any other outfield figure in Pep Guardiola’s squad, which highlights how important he is for the team.
Across those appearances, the 26-year-old has made more progressive passes (260) than any other City player as well as having the highest combined total of tackles and interceptions (100), showing how effective he is in and out of possession.
In fact, the midfielder has made more progressive passes than any other player in the entire division, significantly more than Casemiro (142) has made.
His overall performances have earned the Spain international a season rating of 7.26/10 from WhoScored, making him the fourth-highest rated outfield player in the squad.
With all of that in mind, it’s understandable why Murphy has included the City star in his team of the season, as his efforts have been instrumental to the club’s domestic success this term.
