Danny Murphy shares ‘the one area’ Man City need to strengthen their squad

Manchester City made history at the end of their previous Premier League last season.

Specifically, after racking up 91 points from their 38 league games, Pep Guardiola’s side became the first side to win four titles in a row.

Throughout the latest summer transfer window, City have seen multiple players make moves in and out of the Etihad Stadium.

For example, the Blues have brought in Savinho from Troyes on a permanent deal in addition to selling Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid and Sergio Gomez to Real Sociedad.

With the summer window set to shut at the end of the month once the new league campaign has got underway, a pundit has now made a suggestion as to where the Blues could look to strengthen their squad in the coming days.

Danny Murphy claims Man City need to sign a midfielder

Speaking on talkSPORT (12/8 20:07), Danny Murphy said this on the subject of City’s squad heading into the new season.

He said: “The one area I think for City where they have been, call it fortunate, call it the right mentality, the right physicality, having the right fitness, training whatever, Rodri missing, the only time City looked vulnerable.

“So are they going to sign someone to fill the gap and ease the burden on him?

“Well, it doesn’t have to be necessarily the same player. They can just be someone who specialises in that position in a different way, maybe someone who is purely defensive.”

City are weaker without Rodri in the team

As Murphy mentioned, City showed last season how much weaker they are when they don’t have Rodri in the team.

Specifically, the three Premier League games that the Blues lost last term just happened to be the three matches that the Spaniard was unavailable to play in due to suspension.

In fact, Rico Lewis recently said that playing alongside Rodri is like a dream because of how he can read the game and subdue any danger.

With the midfielder ending the campaign with the highest combined total of tackles and interceptions (96) at City, it’s easy to see why Murphy thinks bringing in a new midfielder who is capable of doing the defensive work Rodri does should be a priority for the Citizens this month.
