Darren Bent claims £180k-a-week Man City player has been a top signing

Manchester City have signed a lot of players since Pep Guardiola took charge of the club.

Since the 53-year-old took charge of City back in 2016, the club have spent significant sums of money to sign players who have helped the Blues win the plethora of trophies they’ve lifted in recent years.

The Citizens are currently on the hunt to win a fifth consecutive Premier League title after becoming the first side to win four in a row last term.

Having been so successful in terms of the amount of silverware they’ve won under Guardiola, this highlights how well the club’s recruitment has been in that time.

Now though, a pundit and former top-flight star has pinpointed one particular transfer deal City that he feels has been rather successful for them.

Darren Bent heaps praise on Man City’s signing of Manuel Akanji

While discussing the subject of who City’s most important players are, Darren Bent had this to say about Manuel Akanji in a recent video shared on the talkSPORT YouTube channel.

He said: “I am not saying he is in the top three [most important players for Manchester City], but he is important to them and he seems to be improving every season.

“And again, they managed to get him when no one else did. Akanji. What was it? About £15m? Come on.”

How has Akanji fared since joining City?

As Bent mentioned, City paid £15m to sign Akanji from Borussia Dortmund back in the 2022 summer transfer window.

Since then, the £180k-a-week defender has gone on to make 103 appearances for the Blues across all competitions prior to their Premier League away match against Newcastle United.

This isn’t the first time a former Premier League player has shared some praise for the 29-year-old, as Danny Murphy described Akanji as a “Rolls-Royce” player back in July.

Having been such a prominent figure in the team since his arrival and helped City win a significant number of trophies, it’s hard to argue that Akanji has not been a top signing for them, especially given the fairly low transfer fee they paid for him.
