Manchester City and Atletico Madrid are close to reaching an agreement over Julian Alvarez – and David Ornstein has shared how much the Spanish giants are set to pay.
For weeks now there has been speculation over the Argentina international’s future.
Alvarez had reportedly grown unhappy with his role in the second half of last season, once Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland had returned from their injuries.
Alvarez also struggled for minutes due to the sensational form of Phil Foden.
Alvarez has been open to leaving the club for a while, and has had interest from several big clubs across Europe, including Juventus, Arsenal and Paris Saint Germain.
But it looks like Atletico Madrid stand to win the race, with renowned journalist David Ornstein dropping a big update this afternoon.
Atletico Madrid set to pay ‘at least 5x’ the £14m Man City paid for Julian Alvarez

David Ornstein has today dropped a big update on the Alvarez situation.
He claims that Atletico Madrid are now nearing an agreement, having been in talks with City over the player. And he has word on how much they are set to pay.
He wrote on X this afternoon: “Atletico Madrid close to striking deal with Man City to sign Julian Alvarez. Not fully agreed but now in sight – clubs negotiating final price & payment terms.
“Would be at least 5x £14m #MCFC paid in 2022 + 24yo keen on #Atleti @TheAthleticFC.”
Earlier today, it had been suggested that Atletico were ready to include Joao Felix in a potential cash-plus-player deal.
But it looks as though Atleti are ready to go with straight cash, although it is very possible they will be staggering payments in order to afford him.
A big development
- Who is Julian Alvarez? The story of the striker who won it all at Man City before joining Atletico Madrid
This is a very big development, being reported by one of the top journalists in the game in Ornstein.
City have needed a quick resolution to this situation and it looks like things are already starting to move.
The situation with Alvarez had felt a bit ominous over the last week or so, when he spoke about lacking game time.
Then, Pep gave a slightly blunt response when his comments were put to him.
It looks like City and Atletico are well on the way to agreeing a deal, and if Ornstein is accurate with those figures – and he is usually very reliable – then it would be a huge sale by the club.
