Journalist Sam Lee has shared some behind-the-scenes details regarding Kyle Walker’s potential transfer move from Manchester City to Bayern Munich.
Last week, it was reported that the Englishman had verbally agreed to join the German club having been in talks with them since June.
Now, one journalist has shed some extra light on this particular development.
Lee discusses Walker update
Speaking in a recent episode of the Let Me Talk podcast, Lee said this on Walker and his verbal agreement with Bayern.
He said: “Middle of last week, officially it was like ‘this is the contract you’ve offered me, yes, let’s do it,’ and City had offered him a two-year deal on more money than he’s getting now and I think more money that he would get at Bayern.
“I think he values the opportunity. It’s a big club coming in at a late stage in your career and want to pay money for you and wanting to give you a big role, I think he likes that.
“I get the big club draw and that’s what Walker decided last week. He hadn’t told City because he was away and obviously City have been trying to keep him so that’s going to cause a bit of a scramble.”
During his time at the Etihad Stadium, the 33-year-old, who has been hailed as a “phenomenal” player in the past by Jose Mourinho, has made 254 appearances for the Citizens, winning numerous trophies in the process including five Premier League titles.
Last season saw Walker start 31 of the 39 games he appeared in across all competitions but found himself on the substitutes bench for the Champions League final, despite putting in a very impressive performances in the semi-final second-leg clash against Real Madrid.
So that, and the lure of playing for a big club like Bayern as Lee said, and having a new career experience could be why the England international reportedly gave the green light over a move to the Bundesliga side.
However, if he did this without informing City or Pep Guardiola, this may not have been the best decision from him or his representatives in our view.
Moving forward, if the Citizens end up sanctioning this proposed move, they should make sure they get whatever they see as a suitable fee for someone as experienced and as capable as Walker has proven himself to be.
