Ledley King has backed Jeremy Doku to be an important player in Manchester City’s squad.
Earlier this week, it was reported that the Manchester club had agreed a deal with Rennes to sign the winger for an overall fee of £55m.
This has since led to one pundit and former Premier League player sharing his thoughts on how the 21-year-old could fit in City’s ranks.
King says Doku will be important for City
Speaking on a recent edition of the Football Daily podcast, King had this to say about what sort of role Doku could have in Pep Guardiola’s squad.
He said: “I think he’s going to be an important squad player. Whether he starts week in week out, I’m not sure but he’s someone who can definitely come off the bench and add a little injection into their attack.”
After working his way through the youth ranks at Anderlecht, the winger made 37 senior appearances for the Belgian club, where he scored six goals and delivered seven assists, before joining Rennes in 2020.
Since then, Doku scored 12 goals and provided 10 assists in 92 appearances for the French side.
Given his young age and the fact that he wasn’t a prolific goalscorer at Rennes, it’s easy to see why King has doubts over whether the winger will be a regular starter for City once his move his officially announced.
However, with the attacker ending the previous Ligue 1 campaign with more carries into the penalty area (47) than any other Rennes player, as well as having the highest rate of goals per shot (0.23) and goals per shot on target (0.5) at the club, this shows what he could offer City and why he could end up being an important attacking figure for the team.
