Former referee Dermot Gallagher has shared his two cents on the behaviour of Yerry Mina during Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Everton.
During the game, the Toffees defender had a clash with City’s Aymeric Laporte as both sets of players were waiting for a corner to be taken, which led to the Spaniard taking a swipe at Mina.
Speaking on the latest edition of Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, Gallagher said this about the incident and the Colombian’s antics, which Pep Guardiola described after the match as being “unnecessary.”
Gallagher said: “He certainly doesn’t get hit in the face, does he? It’s almost like a fly swatter. He’s grabbed hold of him as if to say ‘get off me’, and suddenly he’s acting like he’s been punched in the face, which certainly didn’t happen. It’s not a very good advert.”
It wasn’t just Laporte that the Everton defender got to grips with during Sunday’s clash at Goodison Park, as Erling Haaland, who scored City’s second goal of the game, left the pitch with a significant number of scratches and bruises left by Mina.
With Gallagher not being convinced by the Colombian’s play-acting throughout the game, it’s safe to say that his behaviour didn’t particularly help his team as they failed to stop City from taking a step closer towards regaining the Premier League title.
Moving forward, now that the 28-year-old’s behaviour has been brought to light, this could lead to other referees being aware of it and not giving Mina the sort of decisions he’s trying to get.
From City’s point of view, the fact that Arsenal were defeated by Brighton & Hove Albion now puts the title just one victory away, which could take place on Sunday if they beat Chelsea.
