Joe Gomez has now named Leroy Sane – who Manchester City sold in 2020 – as his toughest opponent.

The Liverpool defender made the comment when speaking to the OnTheJudy Podcast.

So, what did Joe Gomez say about Leroy Sane? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the England international sounds very stressed – even to this day – about what the Germany international used to do to him.

Gomez said: “As a full back, Leroy Sane when he was at City. He’s direct. The whole game I knew was long… Raheem Sterling, Zaha. Those wingers that are direct.”

Even three years on from the German’s Premier League departure, he remains on the Liverpool No.2’s mind.

Sane certainly seemed to enjoy playing against Liverpool and Gomez too.

The 27-year-old has scored four goals against the Reds in eight appearances, with Manchester City winning three of those games.

Interestingly, Sane has not scored against another side more often.

Manchester City – of course – sold the winger to Bayern Munich in a deal worth £54.8m after he refused to sign a new contract at the Etihad Stadium.

Leroy Sane in the form of his life away from Manchester City

Pep Guardiola has obviously moved on from Sane at Manchester City, winning the treble last season with a vastly different type of winger in Jack Grealish.

However, the Essen-born forward is now in the form of his life at Bayern Munich, with some Manchester City fans surely upset about his departure when they watch his performances nowadays.

Sane has impressively scored six goals in just seven Bundesliga appearances so far this season, while also netting one in two UEFA Champions League outings.

Of course, the contract situation made things tough for Manchester City, but Bayern Munich undoubtedly secured a bargain when landing Sane for £54.8m in 2020.
