Manchester City have done the treble, and yet, somehow, some of Pep Guardiola’s decisions are being questioned.
Indeed, speaking on CBS Sports, Micah Richards has told Kyle Walker that he was disappointed with Guardiola’s decision to leave the England international on the bench.
Walker was left out of the City team on Saturday, and Richards wasn’t quite on board with that decision, stating that he thinks the team looks unbalanced when Walker isn’t on the pitch, especially as John Stones keeps pushing forwards playing as more of a number eight these days.
Richards disappointed Walker didn’t start
Richards gave his verdict on the decision to drop Walker.
“You’re doing yourself an injustice there, you have been unbelievable this season, and the way that City have been playing with Stones in the midfield, when you’re not in the team the balance doesn’t seem right to me, so I was obviously disappointed that you didn’t start. That’s a great attitude, you will look back and reflect that you were one of the best ever world full-backs,” Richards said.
Can’t question it
Football is, of course, a game of opinions, but surely we’re beyond the point of anyone questioning Pep Guardiola now?
City have just won the treble and kept a clean sheet in the Champions League final. How can you question his team selection in the defence?
Yes, it wasn’t a vintage performance from City, but in a cup final the result is all that matters, and Guardiola, as it proved, picked a team capable of getting over the line in the toughest game European football has to offer.
Should Walker have started? Well, that’s up for debate, but after winning the Champions League, Guardiola has earned the right to not be questioned.
