Manchester City are the champions of Europe, and, for many, this Champions League win has cemented Pep Guardiola’s place amongst the pantheon of great football managers.
Indeed, as bizarre as it sounds, many were unwilling to crown Pep as one of the greatest ever until he had won the Champions League with a club not named Barcelona, and now, he has ticked that box.
However, according to Steve Howey, speaking on City’s Official YouTube channel after the game, Guardiola didn’t need this win to prove anything to anybody, with the pundit stating that Guardiola should’ve been regarded as a world-class manager before this treble win.
Guardiola didn’t need the Champions League win
Howey gave his verdict on Guardiola.
“I’m so so happy for Pep and that was something that was thrown at him as well, he has that monkey off his back as well, but for me, I don’t think he needed it, because he’s a world calss manager who goes down in history, but I’m delighted for him, I’m delighted for the staff and the fans,” Howey said.
Icing on the cake
Howey is absolutely right, Guardiola didn’t need another Champions League win to cement his legacy, but this is the icing on the cake.
The Man City boss has forged an unbelievable legacy over the past few years at the Etihad, from the centurions to the formidable domestic treble winners to last night’s historic treble winners.
Regardless of Saturday’s result, Guardiola was already well on his way to being considered as the greatest manager of all-time, and now, there’s nobody who can deny it after Guardiola won City their first-ever Champions League trophy.
Guardiola is one of the greatest managers of all-time, that’s no longer something that can be argued.
