Manchester City cruised to victory against Burnley – and Matheus Nunes has come in for a fair bit of praise since the 3-1 win.
Pep Guardiola‘s side continued their great form, beating the Vincent Kompany’s Clarets without any real struggle at the Etihad Stadium.
Julian Alvarez scored a double on his 24th birthday, with Rodri adding a third just after the break. Burnley grabbed a consolation goal right at the death through Ameen Al-Dakhil, but it really was a very comfortable evening for City.
It was great to see Kevin De Bruyne starting again for City. The Belgian maestro looked brilliant in midfield, and wowed with his assist for Julian Alvarez’s first goal.
But someone else who caught the eye was Matheus Nunes, with former City defender Joleon Lescott singing his praises after the game…
Joleon Lescott praises Matheus Nunes after Manchester City’s win over Burnley

Nunes was selected to start last night, joining Rodri in midfield. He operated just behind Kevin De Bruyne, with Rico Lewis occasionally stepping inside to provide support.
Nunes was really good for City, and found real success carrying the ball through Burnley’s midfield.
The Portugal international was very evasive, with his pace allowing him to get away from those marking him.
It was largely thanks to him that City took the lead, as he surged into the box and crossed for Alvarez to score with a simple finish.
Nunes was praised by Robbie Savage, who suggested he was making runs into the box like Ilkay Gundogan used to and after the game, Joleon Lescott always praised the star.
He said on TNT Football: “He was a driving force all night. This was definitely one of his better games. Very impactful and showcased a lot of attributes that you probably wouldn’t seen and probably haven’t seen since his Wolves days.
A great outing for Nunes
Lescott is right – this was one of Nunes’ better games for City, perhaps even his very best.
The 25-year-old has had a fairly average start to life at City since his £53 million summer move from Wolves but he clearly has a lot to offer and we are starting to see him more comfortable in the shirt and in this team of top players.
He is a superb ball carrier and that is a real weapon for City.
One thing he needs to do going forward is add more goals to his game though. He is yet to open his account for City and he will take his game to the next level if he can start to become a goal threat.
