Newcastle United could be without nine players against Manchester City but Eddie Howe is hopeful one key forward will play.

Newcastle United have been ravaged by injuries like many teams in the Premier League this season,

Eddie Howe has been without several of his most important players for months and it has led to a significant drop off in their performances.

Callum Wilson, Harvey Barnes, Nick Pope, Joelinton, Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn and Lewis Hall will all miss Saturday’s match against Manchester City due to injury while Sandro Tonali is suspended.

Things got even worse for the Magpies in Monday’s defeat to Chelsea when star forward Anthony Gordon went off with what appeared to be a serious injury.

However, Howe has provided a positive update on the 23-year-old and is hopeful he could play a part in the FA Cup quarter-final.

Newcastle injury update

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Howe said: “Delighted for him [getting in the England squad].

“I know it’s been a big aim for him. He’s been outstanding this year and has grown week on week.

“It was a strange one [his injury] because when you watch it back you fear it’s a serious injury.

“He partly trained yesterday. We didn’t do a great deal due to the schedule this week but he joined in and it’s great news for us.

“We’ll train again today and make a judgement [on if he can play] after that.”

Man City injury news v Newcastle

City also have their own injury problems ahead of Saturday’s tie.

Though they don’t have as many players out as Newcastle, City were rocked by the news that Kevin De Bruyne has been ruled out of the game.

The midfield maestro was not called up to the Belgian squad this week due to a groin injury.

Thankfully, it’s only thought to be minor and it’s hoped De Bruyne will be back to face Arsenal after the international break.

For now, though, De Bruyne joins Jack Grealish and Ederson on the injury list.

Pep Guardiola could provide an update in his own press conference on Friday afternoon.
