England and Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips has backed Kyle Walker to deal with the threat posed by Kylian Mbappe in his side’s World Cup quarter-final against France.
Ahead of the blockbuster tie, the battle between the two players in either team has been billed up as the deciding factor regarding which country enters the semi-final.
The Paris Saint-Germain superstar has easily been the standout performer in Qatar so far and is possibly the best player in the world currently.
Leading the Golden Boot race with 5 goals already, the World Cup winner has been irresistibly brilliant for Les Bleus.
However, several fans and pundits alike believe the City defender is capable of keeping the 23-year-old quiet on Saturday.
Phillips believes Walker can handle Mbappe threat
Speaking to reporters (via Football Daily), Kalvin Phillips discussed why Kyle Walker could tame Kylian Mbappe as England prepare to face France in their upcoming World Cup tie.
“If there’s anyone that I’d like to put up against [Kylian] Mbappe to stop him, it’s Kyle Walker. I believe he’s an unbelievable defender and probably the only one that’s quicker than him as well.”
Phillips is spot on but Walker could still struggle on Saturday
Well, one reason why any defender could have a tough time against Mbappe is because he is one of the most complete forwards on the planet.
However, Kyle Walker could only because he made the Three Lions’ World Cup squad in the nick of time after a successful groin surgery.
It is worth pointing out that during the 32-year-old’s time on the sidelines, he missed 11 games of football in all competitions.
Not looking fully fit up against Ismaila Sarr in the World Cup last-16 clash as well, whether Walker is best prepared to stop Mbappe from doing what he does best remains a question mark.
However, one must also mention that in the past, Kyle Walker has done so in the past and Kalvin Phillips is right in saying that he is the ideal defender to deal with the Frenchman.
