Steve Sidwell has now claimed that Ivan Toney could play for any club in the Premier League – including Manchester City.

The 40-year-old made the comment when speaking on talkSPORT.

So, what did Steve Sidwell say about Ivan Toney and Manchester City? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the man from Wandsworth conceded that Brentford’s No.17 would not start over Erling Haaland, but claimed that he is good enough to be part of Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Sidwell said: “He goes into every club in the Premier League. Every club. I’ve always liked him, he backs himself. He’s got confidence.”

When asked if this statement about Toney applies to Manchester City as well, the talkSPORT pundit added: “He could play for City. He wouldn’t get in front of Haaland, but if he was on the bench and they’re rotating… Haaland on one week, Toney on next, I’d take that all day.”

Sidwell was then asked if the England international is better than Julian Alvarez, to which he replied – dodging the question somewhat – as follows.

“Oh, they’ve got a good linkup (Alvarez and Haaland). I watched City at West Ham and they link up well, but he (Toney) backs himself to be in any team.”

Steve Sidwell is right – Ivan Toney could play for Manchester City

We agree that Toney is talented enough to play for Manchester City, although we would be extremely surprised if Guardiola decided to sign the 27-year-old while he has Haaland and Alvarez in his ranks.

If either of the Norway international or the Argentina international were prone to injuries, then maybe a deal could be explored.

However, Haaland and Alvarez are almost always available to Guardiola, and they rarely find themselves out of form – therefore, Manchester City have no need for Toney, as good as the Brentford talisman is.
