Manchester City are taking on BSC Young Boys in the Champions League tonight – and Matheus Nunes could do with putting in a statement performance.

Pep Guardiola’s side are back at the Etihad and are looking to continue their winning run in Europe. Last time out City beat Young Boys 3-1, and will be seeking a comprehensive victory at home tonight.

City are looking good again after a recent wobble without Rodri. They are heavy favourites to win this evening.

It will be interesting to see what kind of team Pep puts out.

You would imagine there will be several changes, and there’s a fairly good chance we will see Matheus Nunes starting.

The Portuguese needs to take his chance if selected…

Nunes has just faded into the shadows a little recently at City.

The 25-year-old looked impressive in his first few appearances after making his £53 million transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

On his first start for the club in the Champions League game against Red Star Belgrade, he really shone in midfield and fans were excited about him kicking on.

He then started against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League and did well again, making an assist for Erling Haaland.

But since then, £130,000-a-week star Nunes has struggled to feature for City.

Against Wolves he was hooked at half-time and then against RB Leipzig in the Champions League he only played a few minutes at the end.

Against Arsenal, he was only handed a 20-minute cameo, and he did not even get on against Brighton and Manchester United.

A golden chance for Nunes against BSC Young Boys

It would be quite surprising if Nunes did not start tonight for City.

Having only played for around 20 minutes at the weekend against Bournemouth, he will be nice and fresh for this game.

Pep will probably turn to Rodri again, and then maybe Nunes will be in there alongside the Spaniard. It’s also possible we could see him push up, with someone like Rico Lewis moving in alongside Rodri.

If selected, he needs to really dominate the game.

If he wants to show Pep he is worth more minutes then he needs to get this game by the scruff of the neck and shine.

Young Boys may not be the strongest opposition. But it’s still a good opportunity for Nunes and he needs to remind everyone of his quality and why Pep Guardiola recently called him ‘exceptional’.
